Precision Medicine Readiness Atlas

How ready is each country to use genetic information in patient care? Each of 197 jurisdictions gets a maturity stage (M1 early to M4 integrated) and, where evidence covers all six areas (sequencing, research, data, clinical use, governance and workforce), a readiness score out of 100. Ratings are provisional, based on public sources, and are not an audit of health systems.

Maturity stage (M1–M4, U)

How far a country has gone in delivering genomic medicine. A higher number means more mature.

    Six readiness domains (levels 1–4)

Each domain is rated from 1 (initial) to 4 (integrated and monitored). U means there wasn't enough evidence to rate it.

      Score and confidence

      • 0–100Readiness score. The six domain levels combined using fixed weights (clinical counts most). Only calculated when all six domains are rated; otherwise it shows "Not scored".
      • Evidence confidence. High, Medium or Low: how directly the sources confirm the rating. This is not a statistical error margin.
      • Hatched. Not assessed: there isn't enough public evidence. It does not mean the country has no capability.

      Precision medicine readiness by country

Colour shows the maturity stage, from M1 Early (amber) to M4 Integrated (indigo). Switch to see the readiness score or a single domain. Click a country for its domain profile, evidence and sources. Hatched means not assessed: there wasn't enough evidence, which is not the same as zero.

      Highest documented scores

The 15 highest of the 80 fully profiled jurisdictions. Read the findings before comparing: scores reflect a documented minimum and aren't adjusted for population.

      Different paths to maturity

Examples picked out in the workbook. Bar height is the level per domain; hatched means not assessed.

      Capability by domain

How many jurisdictions sit at each level (1 = initial, 4 = integrated and monitored), domain by domain. Clinical translation is the hardest gate.

      How to read this assessment

      How strong the evidence is

Confidence in the sources behind each rating. This is not a statistical error margin.

        What the score weighs

The composite (0–100) is only calculated when all six domains are rated: sum of (level × weight) ÷ 4.

        How complete each profile is

Number of domains with enough evidence to rate, out of six.

        Stage gates

The stage comes from clinical and network gates, not from the composite score.

          Caveats

          • Provisional rubricThe rubric was designed by the analyst and is not a validated WHO or GA4GH index. Scores describe documented capability. You can't infer national access or quality from one laboratory.
          • Unknown is not zeroU means there isn't enough evidence. Zero is reserved for authoritative evidence that no capability exists, and no country got zero just because a search found little.
          • Clinical milestones differSequencing, actionable variants, reports, changed management and improved outcomes are separate milestones. A population reference resource is not proof of routine clinical care.
          • Scale is not interchangeableParticipants, samples, array genotypes, WES, WGS, haplotypes and clinical analyses are counted separately. For example, FinnGen's 500,348 participants are mostly array genotypes, not WGS.
          • Retrieval depthMost claims come from search excerpts. They need a full-text review before being used for publication or policy decisions.
